Winners Revealed in the 2021 Colorado Manufacturing Awards
Companies from across the state win top honors in the sixth annual event

The 2021 Colorado Manufacturing Awards recognizes outstanding companies and people shaping American manufacturing, in a region emerging as a model for a new, dynamic sector.

Denver, Colorado — Winners were announced last week in the sixth annual Colorado Manufacturing Awards at a virtual event co-hosted by CompanyWeek and Manufacturer’s Edge Colorado’s NIST-sponsored Manufacturing Extension Partner. Sen. John Hickenlooper (D-CO) and Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO) shared video messages with the winners during the ceremony.

With 14 categories and more than 40 finalists, this year’s CMAs were the biggest yet. CompanyWeek Publisher Bart Taylor also noted the participation of nearly 25 judges, many of them previous CMA finalists and winners. “The thoughtfulness of the deliberations was impressive,” he said of the judging process. “As they are every year, the judges were a highlight.”

Winners hailed from across the state, even as Arvada and Boulder County cemented their statuses as regional enclaves of manufacturing success and diversity. Special Aerospace Services (Boulder/Arvada) was awarded Aerospace Manufacturer of the Year, while Sundyne (Arvada) earned honors as the 2021 Industrial/Equipment Manufacturer of the Year.

Oribi Manufacturing, a Commerce City based advanced composites manufacuter focused on using automation to deliver carbon fiber parts to previously underserved markets, has won the 2021 Colorado Manufacturing Award for the Energy and Transportation Manufacturing segment for their innovation in carbon fiber parts manufacturing. Oribi was selected the prestigious award because of their continuous innovation in manufacturing processes.

This award will propel Oribi forward by recognizing them as a leader in carbon fiber parts manufacturing. Oribi thanks the Colorado Manufacturing Awards and Company Week for recognizing our hard work in advancing composites manufacturing and for selecting us as a 2021 winner.

Past winners of this awards are Vairex (2020), Bolder Industries (2019), Lightning Systems (2018), Forge Nano (2017), Vestas Towers (2016)

Hydrochloric Acid Solution Impeller Test

Case Study: Hydrochloric Acid Solution Impeller Test

Summary

Oribi set out to determine degradation expectations when using highly destructive fluids and solids and has impellers currently under extreme testing conditions.

Advanced Composites Advantage

Advanced composites consist of a polymer matrix reinforced with high-strength continuous fibers. The fibers are custom orientated to maximize strength and stiffness required by the impeller design, while minimizing weight and unwanted flex.

  • Vanes are thinner and have ultra-smooth surfaces enabling higher hydraulic efficiency
  • ACM’s are up to 10x stronger than other materials and effective for pumping abrasive solids within liquid
  • ACM’s are highly corrosion resistant and ideal for the most corrosive and flammable fluids
  • ACM’s are anti-static, non-sparking and thermally stable from -50°F to 400°F

 Testing Conditions

  • Design: 5-vane open impeller for 3 x 2 pump
  • Hub: Fiberglass / PEEK, threaded to shaft
  • Size: 5 ¾” diameter (8” pump)
  • Material: Fiberglass / PEEK
  • Solution: 37% Hydrochloric Acid
  • Solids: 10% of total solution
  • Temp: 190° F
  • Duration: 19+ months, 24/7 operation
  • Head: 70 ft.
  • Flow: 400 gal/min
  • Motor: 1750 RPM with 5HP motor

Results

Continuous testing has shown no impeller degradation and is fully functioning as intended. Vanes show no indication of corrosion, wear, chipping, nor any other deformity. Impeller base shows no wear and is locking vanes in place as designed.
